4 Reasons Why You Need To Focus on Podcast Workflow

For many beginner podcasters only learning how to record, edit, and produce a podcast episode can seem overwhelming. The last thing they think about is the workflow for their podcast. The problem with not considering the podcast workflow is that you’re adding more work than necessary.

We’re inviting Colin Gray from The Podcast Host, as our guest speaker for our August 2016 Academy Session to go over podcast workflow and other production tips. He’s going to be giving our paid Podcast Websites members access to his playbook and helping them create a rapid podcasting workflow to get better and more content out.

So many podcasters don’t’ realize why a good podcast workflow is so important. They don’t take the time to outline and formulate a plan that will enable them to produce their podcast in the same fashion each time. Colin will be going over ways to create and improve workflow, but we wanted to give you reasons why determining your workflow is really important.

1. Podcast workflow will save you time

When a podcaster follows a clear workflow plan, it saves him time. Think about when you’re learning to cook a new dish – you follow a recipe to understand the right measurements and the order of adding and cooking ingredients. The first time it takes longer to cook that meal because you’re referencing the recipe. Then you make it again and again until finally, you have it memorized and can make the dish without looking at the recipe.

An excellent podcast workflow is your podcasting method. At first having all the steps you need outline will help prevent you from skipping steps – and it will seem like it take forever to get episodes out. But the more you use the same workflow, week after week, it becomes second hand and all the sudden you’re cranking out episodes. The fastest way to get there is to have a well thought out workflow that addresses everything you need to produce your show before you start recording.

2. Good workflow saves effort

Podcasting sometimes is a lot of work. You have to record, edit, and market the podcast. Plus many of you have to write show notes, post them on your website, and ensure that your site stays current with updates (of course our Podcast Websites members never have to worry about that part). Good podcast workflow means you’ll see opportunities to save effort because you’re doing the same things over again. You’ll look for ways to speed up editing or ensuring that you have all the information about your guests to write fantastic show notes. Having the steps known up front means you know what to expect and if you’re on track.

3. Podcast workflow helps maintain consistency

Podcast workflow leads to consistency in the result more so than a podcaster who just “wings it.” When you have a proper workflow plan, you’re able to follow the steps needed to ensure your podcast is a success. You won’t miss things like providing the tagging is done properly, or the show notes are formatted correctly. Having a workflow, you follow each time will force you to maintain the same order. Following the same order builds consistency.

4. Allows you to discover ways to outsource tasks

One of the secret benefits of having a workflow you follow each podcast episode is the ability to see where you can outsource tasks. If you have an excellent method of getting guests, your workflow can be passed to a virtual assistant who can take on the onboarding for you. Get recording down quickly; you’ll be able to hire an editor to make it sound incredible. You can even outsource the uploading and the marketing of the podcast episode itself.

The workflow will free you to hand over these tasks while ensuring the consistency and quality remain the same.

Did we miss any?

There are many reasons a podcaster will want to have great podcast workflow others than the ideas we’re sharing. We know Colin Gray from The Podcast Host will drop a bunch of ideas during our exclusive Academy session on August 24th at 12:00 pm EDT. But do you have any other reasons why more podcasters should focus on creating and maintaining an excellent podcast workflow?
