A Harvard Assemblage – SoundEducation.FM Round Up
This past weekend, Mark and I got a chance to sponsor and be a part of a very niche event called Sound Education that took place at Harvard. Put on by Zachary Davis, Harvard student, the event was part learning sessions, part festival, each night culminating in a great networking party.
Attendees came from all parts of the educational and academic world. I was so excited to meet some of the most interesting people and shows.
Dr. Adam Gamwell and Dr. Ryan H Collins, have been producing This Anthro Life, for 5 years. 12-year veteran Dr. Ginger Campbell, host of the Brain Science Podcast for 12 years, spoke and attended to gain some traction for a new show to be released this fall. The History of WWII host Ray Harris Jr. and I spoke about how best to go about marketing campaigns – a giant push or a trickle? On his panel, Mark discussed the pros and cons of doing podcasts as a series – specifically the new JFK35 with Matt Porter. What if the commitment is too much? Unlike podcasts we normally coach, the academic audience can sometimes have different needs from their hosts and different expectations.
This experience was so much fun for both myself and Mark. Being able to flex a different side of the brain, to have conversations about marketing and monetizing shows where the money route is NOT as obvious, was an absolutely delightful challenge. Plus just BEING around great minds like Ben Franklin’s World‘s Liz Covart, Grammar Girl‘s Mignon Fogarty and The Story Behind‘s Emily Prokop is whipped cream icing on a delicious podcasting cake.
The best part of this event for me was the best part of any podcasting conference I go to. The people. There is something so special about podcasters getting together, strategizing and bonding over their love of topic, their struggle with exposure, their commitment to their art. In this realm, podcasting is so much more than an art. In the academic world, podcasting is teaching. Exposing lesser known facts, strategies, sciences. It’s exploration of new and old worlds. How inspiring that many of the greatest minds, representing many of the greatest institutions and organizations, had an opportunity to learn and teach together in person, and we were completely honored and humbled to be a part of it.
Well done, Zach Davis!
